1998-99 Skybox Premium That's Jam - Strange, but Awesome!

"It's a flippin Smuckers Label!" My friend's first reaction to this set was perfect. This set has to be of the weirdest inserts in the history of card collecting. I've always had the opinion that 90's basketball inserts were the most creative and unique from any era/sport in the hobby...this set is a perfect example.

These were inserted at the rate of 1:96 packs in 1998-99 Skybox Premium series 2 hobby boxes. Although not the most valuable insert for Premium in 1998, this set is definitely my favorite. The unique/weird idea of using a jelly label for a basketball card mixed with the acetate stock made this a must have for my collection. The set contains 15 cards with the Kobe Bryant commanding the highest price. The Slam Funk insert is usually the attention grabber from series 2 simply because it was inserted 1 in 360 packs. Sheer uniqueness make the That's Jam set much more desirable to me.

Got my first one today! The Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway #8 PSA 10

Update on the Pippen Master Set... Added some sweet 90's inserts!

I have been focusing on my Pippen Master Set lately. I've been really interested in some of the high end 90's inserts. I was able to find a few good ones on eBay, and managed to crossover some BGS 9.5's to PSA 10. I am fearing that I have exhausted the immediate supply of PSA Gem Mint Pippen cards, because they are getting harder and harder to find. Here are a few of my recent pickups. The Dunk'N Go-Nuts set is one of the most unique insert sets in the hobby. I was so glad to finally find the Pippen.

For those who haven't looked at basketball card prices from the 90's lately they have exploded. Inserts that recently (last five years) could have been purchased for a couple bucks are not going for several hundreds, even thousands. Sets like 1997-98 Skybox E-X 2001 Jambalaya, 1998-99 Skybox Thunder Noyz Boyz, and 1998-99 Fleer Tradition Playmakers Theatre are going for crazy money. 300 or 400 bucks for the worst player in the set, and thousands for the Michael Jordan! Hopefully I'll be able to find some of these rare Pippen cards in high grade.

PSA Set Registry Fun.

I bought a few PSA 10 Scottie Pippen cards for my Pippen Master Set. Nothing special, just some early 90's base and parallels. Even though they are relatively inexpensive and easy to find, I really like basketball cards from the early 90's. It reminds me of my early days in card collecting...back when Shaq was EVERYTHING!

I've recently focused on my PSA Registry sets. I tend to get very competitive and it fuels my card buying. I am trying to become #1 on both the Terrell Davis and Scottie Pippen Master Sets. I am first on the Pippen Master Set basically by default, but I'm getting killed on the Davis Master Set. I'm up against a certified Terrell Davis Super-Collector. He has his own website dedicated to his Davis collection. Although I'll probably never catch this guy, it's fun to try. I almost want some other Pippen collectors to come in and knock me down the list just for the sport of it! I suppose I just want a sense that I'm part of a collecting community....who knows.

If you haven't seen the PSA site with all the registered sets you should check them out. Some people have amazing collections on display here.   http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistry/
